The .40 Smith & Wesson cartridge is also known as the .40 Auto, .40 caliber, .40 AH, .40 Liberty, 10mm Short or the 10mm Kurz. The .40 Smith & Wesson cartridge was created by Smith & Wesson along with Winchester and debuted in 1990. The round was originally developed and tested for use by law enforcement (specifically the FBI) and is currently used by agencies in the United States, Canada and Australia. The United States Coast Guard has adopted handguns chambered in the .40 Smith & Wesson cartridge as their standard sidearm.
The .40 Smith & Wesson cartridge is considered the round ideal for both personal defense and law enforcement due to its ballistic performance. The .40 caliber round is often compared to the 10mm round, but the casing and overall cartridge length are shorter than the 10mm cartridge. The .40 S&W bullet is larger than the 9mm Luger and contains load pressures "hotter" than the .45 ACP. Projectiles weights range from 105 grains to 200 grains and are available in a standard full metal jacket (FMJ) and variations of jacketed hollow points (JHP).
