The .223 Remington is a centerfire cartridge very similar to the 5.56x45mm NATO round, but differs in leade length and chamber shape. The .223 ammunition was originally developed for use in the M16 rifle, but has become increasingly popular for use in varmint/bolt action rifles and civilian variants of the M16; like the AR15 and the Ruger Mini-14. Other users who commonly favor the use of the .223 Remington cartridge are law enforcement, target shooters, survivalists and three-gun competitors.
The .223 Remington cartridge is similar to the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge, but use of the 5.56x45mm cartridge is not recommend for some rifles chambered in .223 Remington; unless the manufacturer states other wise. The leade or throat of the 5.56mm NATO cartridge is longer and can result in higher load pressures than .223 Remington ammunition. The longer throat and higher chamber pressure of 5.56 NATO ammunition can cause excessive wear or stress on rifles chambered for only .223 Remington. Please consult your rifles owners manual to verify ammunition caliber compatibility for safe operating guidelines and to avoid potential firearm failure.
